| | | Home > Cord Blood Banking > Is there any risk to the mother or baby when you save umbilical cord blood? | |
 | After the birth, the doctor clamps and cuts the baby’s umbilical cord. The blood that remains in the umbilical cord is then harvested. Because this is done after childbirth, it is entirely painless. According to a study published in the June 17th 2006 issue of the British medical journal The Lancet by simply delaying the cord clamping for two minutes, one can provide the infant with “the extra blood, and the iron it contains, from the placenta.” The study indicated that a two-minute delay in clamping the cord significantly increases the child’s iron status at six months of age. |
